Next steps for vaccine in San Mateo County are unknown

1/8/2021 (Permalink)

The vaccination process has begun. The Biden administration's goal for vaccines is 100 million shots in his first 100 days. Under the Trump administration, the vaccination process has started, with 10.3 million people getting the first two shots and 29 million still available.

The current process of releasing vaccines is by phases.

Phase 1A : healthcare workers, workers and residents at nursing facilities and other longer-term care homes.

Phase 1B tier 1: people 65 and older, workers in education, emergency service workers, and food and agriculture workers (farm and grocery store workers).

Phase 1B tier 2: workers in transportation and logistics; industrial, residential, and commercial sectors; critical manufacturing workers; incarcerated individuals; homeless individuals.

Phase 1C: will cover anyone 50 and older, anyone 16 to 64 years old with underlying health conditions or disabilities, working in water and waste management; workers in defense, energy, and chemical sectors; communications and IT workers, financial services, and government operations workers, community service groups.

Currently, San Mateo is in Phase 1A. California has opened to Phase 1B tier one, but San Mateo County is not ready yet. The main challenge they are facing is staffing. The hospitals are below 0.7% ICU capacity.

“On top of a statewide lag in supply and distribution of doses, Srinivasan said the current surge in cases and hospitalizations have also posed a vaccination hurdle for cross-county medical facilities. Health care systems are tasked with balancing the potential to lose a recently vaccinated employee experiencing side effects with staffing highly needed hospital beds. And general scheduling needs like time off can set the vaccination process back.” (Sierra Lopez Daily Journal staff)

As more healthcare workers get vaccinated, we move closer to Phase 1B. To keep track of the state-wide current phase click here.
